Student Happiness, Inclusion, Equity, Leadership, and Difference (SHIELD)

Empowering Students to Lead with Understanding and Compassion

At Rectory, we believe that belonging fuels confidence—and confident students become courageous leaders. Our SHIELD initiative (Student Happiness, Inclusion, Equity, Leadership, and Difference) was born from that belief.

SHIELD began organically in 2019 when a group of students came together to create a safe space for honest, thoughtful conversations about equity and inclusion on campus. Meeting weekly, they explored topics such as gender equity, racial justice, and LGBTQ+ awareness, asking important questions about how the community could grow stronger together.

What started as conversation quickly became action. SHIELD members developed thoughtful recommendations and presented them to school leadership, helping shape how Rectory continues to celebrate diversity and ensure that every voice is heard, respected, and valued.

Today, SHIELD remains a cornerstone of student leadership and advocacy—empowering students to listen deeply, speak kindly, and lead inclusively. Through dialogue, education, and community initiatives, SHIELD helps ensure that the Rectory experience is one where every student feels known, supported, and inspired to make a difference.
