Frequently Asked Questions

The Infirmary is open 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9:00-11:00 a.m. & 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and 8:30-10:30 a.m. & 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Sundays when school is in session. Students should make every effort to visit the Infirmary prior to meals or during a free period so as not to miss class, school meetings, assembly, or other required activity. In an emergency, of course, a student may visit the Infirmary any time.

A student with a significant fever, an illness that would significantly impair the student's ability to function in class, or a contagious illness such as chicken pox, are examples of conditions that would prompt the Infirmary staff to require the student to be admitted to the Infirmary.

A student who becomes ill at night must notify the dorm master on duty. That responsible person will arrange to contact the nurse on call.

Students are asked to keep their parents updated on all health issues. Parents are always notified if a student is admitted to the Infirmary or if he or she needs treatment in the emergency room. For non-emergent issues an email will be sent. We encourage parents to call or email any time they have questions or concerns about student health issues.

The Infirmary should be notified of any student sick at home. If your child has a fever they should remain at home until completely well. The Education Office should also be notified, so appropriate faculty are kept informed.

We are happy to coordinate care with your child's physician. Written orders from the physician are needed in order for any treatment and/or medication to be administered through the Infirmary. Have the doctor fill out our medication form and FAX it to the Infirmary at 860-382-4375. This form can be printed from the forms menu. Written orders for other treatments may also be faxed to this number.

When a student's physician limits participation in sports or other activities, a written doctors note must be presented to the Infirmary. Clearance to return to full activity must be in writing, as well.

Please keep in mind that the Infirmary staff and athletic trainer put your child's health and wellbeing above all else. Years of experience have taught us that an ill or injured student is at a much higher risk for severe injury if allowed to participate in sports or activities. It is our hope that parents will support our decisions concerning sports participation. We would encourage your child's physician to call us. If a physician examines your child and clearance is given, it must be provided in writing.

The Infirmary staff will assist you in making any appointments needed, but you will need to speak with them prior to the visit, to give permission and arrange payment for service. We will also arrange for transportation to and from the appointment if needed. There is a transportation fee.

The school has two counselors who see students as needed. If a determination is made that support from a professional not on Rectory's staff would most benefit the student, the counseling department will assist in identifying an appropriate local option.

No, not without specific permission from the Director of Nursing. All medications must be reported to the Infirmary Staff. The Infirmary staff will allow certain medications to be kept in a student's room. Contact the infirmary for specific details related to your child. Under no conditions will students be allowed to have controlled or psychotropic medications in their rooms. We do not dispense herbal, homeopathic, supplements, vitamins or non U.S. Formulary Medications. (See medication administration policy.)

The Athletic Trainer is available on sports days for evaluation and treatment of injuries. This service is free of charge. There are fees, however, for protective equipment provided by the Athletic Trainer. This includes, but is not limited to splints and braces. The Athletic Trainer works closely with the Infirmary staff. All doctors' orders for treatment for athletic injuries need to be in writing.

The director of the Infirmary, the athletic trainer and school counselors take a team approach to coordinating the care of every student. There is frequent communication between all three offices in an effort to comprehensively monitor treatment and recovery from illness, injuries and mental-health issues.

All medical records are kept confidential. However, medical information may be shared, on a need-to-know basis, with the Director of Residential Life, dorm parent, advisor, coach, headmaster and any other faculty deemed necessary. Sensitive communication with all those who support your child is a Rectory hallmark.

A list of students admitted to the Infirmary is called in daily to the Education Office for teacher notification. Detailed information of their status is shared with faculty as needed.

Encourage your child to get enough sleep and to eat well. See that they get a yearly flu shot. If they are sick at home, keep us informed and please do not return them to school until they are better. Be sure to fill out appropriate health forms completely and promptly. Inform us of any pertinent changes including medical insurance. If on medication, please make sure to provide us with refills or new Rx’s in a timely manner so as to prevent any lapse in treatment. And lastly please call or email us any time you have a question or concern about your child.
