Athletic Philosophy

The purpose of Rectory's athletics is to inspire a lifelong commitment to physical fitness and health and to promote risk-taking and self-confidence. Although inter-school competition is a large part of our program, the emphasis is on individual success, enjoyment, skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Varsity teams are extremely competitive and successful, while other levels help students develop basic skills.

Participation in the sports program is mandatory for all students during each of the three seasons. Every student has a chance to participate on a team at the level that suits his or her skill level so that each can experience success and growth.

Teams, Facilities, & Coaches

NEPSAC

Everyone takes part in sports on levels that test the skilled athlete and encourage the beginner. Through athletics, we inspire individual success, enjoyment, skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Rectory School is a member of the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC).

Athletic Training

The primary role of the Athletic Training Department is service to the athletic community.

The sports medicine staff provides quality health care to all students at Rectory School.

We are devoted to the care, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries with our primary objective being the safety and welfare of all students.

Athletic Facilities

Craig Scott Colhoun Athletic Center

The Craig Scott Colhoun Athletic Center is the central hub for Rectory's indoor sports. It includes a classic wood floor gymnasium, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a wrestling room, locker rooms, an outdoor pool, and an athletic training room.

Basketball Court

Located on the main level of the Colhoun Athletic Center, our gymnasium is home to our volleyball and basketball teams. It includes space for one volleyball court. Six basketball hoops allow for full-court and half-court games. Along with multiple courts, the gym provides plenty of bleacher seating for spectators.

John P. Loos Training Center

Rectory's state-of-the-art training center, located in the Colhoun Athletic Center basement, includes cardiovascular and strength training equipment and a variety of free weights.

Wrestling Room

Adjacent to the Loos Training Center in the lower level of the Colhoun Athletic Center, Rectory's wrestling room is fully equipped with mats and pads to host multiple meets throughout the winter.

Swimming Pool, Fields, and Courts

Across multiple acres, on Rectory’s stunning campus, you will find six athletic fields, six tennis courts, an outdoor basketball court, an outdoor pool, trails, and four-square courts. Soccer, Lacrosse, Baseball, Softball, Cross Country, and tennis are some of the sports that compete on these surfaces.

Outdoor Swimming Pool

Rectory’s outdoor swimming pool is open late spring, summer, and early fall to faculty and students. The shallow end begins at 3 feet and runs to 9 feet so all swimmers can enjoy it.

Langford Baseball Field

The Langford Baseball Field, dedicated in memory of Jeffrey Langford '03, is the home of Rectory's varsity baseball team. Located on the south side of campus, the manicured field boasts team dugouts and an electronic scoreboard.

Hiking & Biking Trails

Several trails are located across Rectory's 138-acre campus. The trails are perfect for hiking, walking dogs, and sledding in the winter. Several years ago, students and faculty created a mountain biking trail with switchbacks, berms, and off-camber corners.

Whipple-Brewster Tennis Courts

Take a leisurely walk or drive through campus and as you look out into the foothills of Pomfret you can admire the six hardcourt tennis courts adjacent to the athletic fields. While the courts are used by our co-ed Varsity and JV teams for practices and matches in the spring, the courts are frequently used after sports and on the weekends by all students.

Outdoor Basketball Courts

The outdoor basketball court has been on campus for a long time and was recently renovated during the construction of The Seaward Family Student Pavilion. It is used at all times of the day and year. Students and faculty can be found there during academic day breaks, in the afternoon after athletics, in the evenings after study hall, and all throughout the weekend. Students enjoy pick-up games, knockout games, and just shooting around.

Swimming Pool at Hale YMCA

The Hale YMCA Swimming Pool is home to Rectory’s Swim Team. Students get the opportunity to travel to the beautiful facility for practices and swim meets.

Jahn Rink at Pomfret School

Rectory’s Varsity and Junior Varsity Hockey teams call Jahn Rink, located at Pomfret School, their home during the winter. The rink boasts an iconic glass entryway, and a 200 x 85-foot hockey arena. It includes ample seating on one side and spacious locker rooms for teams on the other.

Squash Courts at Pomfret School

Located at Pomfret School, the international squash courts host Rectory’s Squash team daily during the winter. There are eight courts where spectators can watch from the ground level or get a bird’s-eye view from the second floor.

9 and 18-Hole Golf Courses

Connecticut National Golf Course is the home of our varsity golf team. The course includes a stunning 18-hole golf course, two practice greens, driving range, and short game area. The JV team plays at Woodstock Golf Course.
