Just before the break, the students heard presentations from faculty members who would be running elective courses and then voted on their top choices. The twelve electives include Brain-Based Learning, Debate, Mosaics, Snackage, Ted Talk, Sports Medicine, Yearbook, Newspaper, Helping in the Tech Office, For the Love of Chocolate and Change Your Words Change Your Mindset, Magic The Gathering, and the spring musical.
At the start of one elective period this week there was a flurry of activity up in the school store where I found students excitedly purchasing cards for Magic The Gathering. Not sure what the fuss was about I stopped by the classroom where
Mr. Klett was engrossed along with the students in this collectible card game. I'm not well versed enough to explain it in layman's terms but it involves casting spells, buying and trading cards, and much much more. To learn more I'd suggest going here.
As it is early for some of the other electives, we'll see the results of some of their projects in upcoming weeks but I enjoyed sitting in on the Ted Talk elective and seeing the enthusiasm for chocolate as a hunt for both the sweet and historic clues was underway in another classroom. . The students in Brain-Based Learning were clearly enjoying their activities as I walked in on a raucous congo line in progress and I overheard an in-depth conversation about news writing in the Newspaper elective.
It will be great to see progress on all fronts upon our return from Winter Break.
