Your Launch Year - 9th-Grade Experience

When asked to describe the impact of his ninth-grade experience at Rectory, a recent graduate replied thoughtfully, “That was the year I grew up.”

For many Rectory students, ninth grade is the defining year—the one that cements who they are, how they learn, and where they’re headed next.

Designed as the culminating experience of our Middle School, the 9th-grade year offers opportunities that simply cannot be replicated in a traditional high school environment. As the “seniors” on campus, ninth graders enjoy a privileged status within our community—one that comes with heightened expectations, meaningful leadership roles, and transformative responsibilities. Navigating these expectations helps students build independence, resilience, and confidence that last a lifetime.

Academic Challenge. Real-World Relevance. Lasting Impact.

Intellectually, the 9th-grade year at Rectory is intentionally rigorous. Students dive into a demanding course load and are encouraged to challenge themselves, refine their study habits, and master higher-level learning skills that prepare them for the next academic chapter—and beyond.

At the heart of this experience is the Ninth-Grade Capstone Project, a hallmark of our program that embodies everything Rectory stands for: choice, challenge, relevance, and independence. Students select issues they care deeply about, research them with academic precision, and present their findings and solutions to the entire school community. The Capstone experience doesn’t just test knowledge—it builds confidence, curiosity, and purpose.

Leadership and Responsibility in Action

Ninth graders are visible leaders on campus—mentoring younger students, serving as dorm proctors, leading student organizations, and modeling Rectory’s core values in every aspect of daily life. Through these experiences, students learn that leadership is less about authority and more about influence, empathy, and integrity.

Faculty mentors guide each student through this pivotal transition, helping them set goals, reflect on progress, and discover their own authentic leadership style.

Staying for ninth grade at Rectory isn’t just “one more year”—it’s a strategic advantage.

Rectory’s 9th-grade experience uniquely positions students for success at the top secondary schools across the country. It’s the year they grow in confidence, strengthen academic habits, and lead in meaningful ways before stepping into larger, more complex environments.

By the end of ninth grade, students don’t just graduate from Rectory—they launch from it. They move forward with a clear sense of identity, sharpened skills, and the confidence to thrive in the secondary schools and programs that best fit their ambitions.

For our graduates, the 9th-grade year is more than an ending—it’s a beginning. It’s the moment they realize that growth, challenge, and character go hand in hand.
