The Alumni and Development Office treated the soon-to-be-alumni Class of 2021 to a pizza party and introductory program that described the resources available to Rectory School alumni. The event featured some wise words from Rectory alumnus, and current faculty member, Quadry Anderson ‘09.
On Tuesday, May 18, Rectory’s 9th-grade class walked from the Bigelow Academic Building across campus to the Brittain House lawn for a program called “Leaving the Wolf Den.” Established in 2018, Leaving the Wolf Den is a program run by the Alumni and Development Office that aims to familiarize soon-to-be alumni with the programs and services available to Rectory graduates. This year’s program took place on a beautiful spring day and was the first in-person program the Alumni and Development Office has been able to host since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic. In addition to hearing about how they can stay in touch with Rectory once they move on to secondary school and beyond, Rectory alumnus and current faculty member Quadry Anderson ‘09 shared his graduation and young alumnus story. The ninth graders relate to Mr. Anderson in a special way given their shared experiences, and it was clear that they took his wise words to heart as he advised them to remain focused and maintain their Rectory relationships.
Students then had an opportunity to reflect on their feelings as their time as Rectory students near its end. They wrote letters to themselves about how they are feeling in the present moment and what they hope their near and distant futures look like. They sealed their letters in envelopes that will be stored in the Alumni and Development office and delivered to the Class of 2021 on the occasion of their 10th Rectory reunion. This element of the program was instituted in 2018 as well, and we anticipate these “time capsule” moments will be an eagerly-awaited feature of future reunions.
After a scrumptious lunch of pizza, students enjoyed frozen desserts from the Dining Hall, and newly designated class agents, Carson A., Carson L., Tyler M., and Julia Z. collected contact information from their classmates, thus establishing their initial alumni connection to Rectory. The Alumni and Development Office is grateful to Head of School Fred Williams and Associate Director of Development Marcia Williams for hosting us on their lawn, to Maintenance for event setup, the Dining Hall for providing dessert, Henry’s in Putnam for delivering the pizza and drinks, the class agents for their excellent work, and to the Class of 2021 for all they have contributed to Rectory as students and all they will contribute as alumni.
An adapted virtual Leaving the Wolf Den program was held for students learning online on May 21, 2021.
