This year, members of the Rectory School Karate team will have an opportunity to study a style of Japanese karate called Shotokai.
There are many myths, legends and stories concerned with karate traditions. The style Rectory students will study was founded around 1902 by a public school athletic instructor named Mr. Gichin Funakoshi in Okinawa, and island that is part of the nation of Japan. According to Mr. Funakoshi, his new gymnastic program (which he named "karate") was based on a style of martial arts that had come to Okinawa from China four hundred years before his time. Mr. Funakoshi, however, was the first man to formalize the series of techniques and choreographed movements currently known as karate. (Mr. Funakoshi adopted the tradition of wearing colored belts from Judo- a type of Japanese wrestling).
The Rectory School Karate team will be coached by Fran Morano, and Norm Herrick, Sr. who has studied karate for fifteen years.
