COMPUTING AT RECTORY

Students attending Rectory will look forward to accessing over 120 Apple computers. According to grade level they will have use of educational enhancing software such as: Oregon Trail, Operation Frog, Inspiration and Math Realm software. Microsoft Office, email, Photoshop iTunes and iMovie augment creative reports and papers.

Ninth graders will have the opportunity to learn industry standard applications such as Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks and Photoshop from teachers whose experience reflects commercial settings. Students will also procure a greater understanding of Apples "Tiger" operating system.

Saving:

The School has introduced USB flash drives, which has replaced floppy disks as the storage medium of choice.  In addition, all students have a network folder for backing up important documents.

Internet access:
The school maintains a growing wireless network which supports all platforms and is connected via fiber backbone to a T1 circuit. The campus network includes a 10/100/1000 base I infrastructure to all classrooms and office space.

Web Filtering:

The School uses Barracuda, a comprehensive Internet access management and web filtering system. The program blocks free e-mail services, chat and instant messaging, gambling, adult, and gaming sites.  The list of blocked sites is automatically updated on a regular basis to stay current with the new sites that become live every day.  The software also has a database that can be modified manually and updated to block sites deemed inappropriate for student use.

Access to Electronic Resources:

The Rectory School places great importance on helping students balance work and play. Access to many of these resources is restricted to a specific time and is always supervised. Students do have access to many electronic resources, including electronic mail, in many of the computing areas. Access to many inappropriate sites is restricted with the School’s web filtering program. Parents and students are required to sign an “acceptable use” policy and students are expected to abide by it.

Electronic Mail Naming Protocol: All faculty, staff and students have electronic mail accounts. You can send mail to anyone in the community by using the following standards:

First letter of the first name + last name@rectorystudents.org

Please Note this is different from our Faculty Addresses

As an example, if you were writing to student Mary Lyon, you would write to:

Should my son bring a computer to school?

This question can be answered best by reviewing a student’s learning style and self-discipline. If your son is easily distracted, a personal computer for his room may not be the right choice. A conference with the student’s teacher, advisor and the Director of Individualized Instruction will help determine the best course of action.

If you choose to buy a machine, perhaps an older model without all the bells and whistles to distract your student might be a good choice. An older sibling’s machine may be the perfect fit. We are a mostly Macintosh campus, running Microsoft Office.

If you would like consultation before your son arrives at school, please contact Jason Allan at jallan@rectoryschool.org

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

It is the goal of Rectory to ensure that education drives the technology. No infrastructure is installed, no hardware or software is purchased without thought as to how it will help our students learn. In each academic subject area, software and hardware is evaluated by a team consisting of the Director of Technology, the teacher and the Department Chair.

For additional information, please contact Jason Allan at jallan@rectoryschool.org.

DIGITAL POLICIES

Starting in the 2007-2008 school year, the Rectory School technology department is excited to announce that there will be limited wireless internet on campus.

However, for security and safety reasons the following will be implemented:

  • all computers and cell phones arriving on campus must be checked and registered by the Technology department during the first week of school.
  • only registered computers will be allowed on the network.
  • unauthorized computers on the network will be confiscated.

Please do not bring any banned items onto campus.

Unauthorized and/ or unregistered equipment will be confiscated.

In addition, students are encouraged to register not only their computers and phones but their other small, personal hi-tech equipment.
